A permanent resident is someone who has been given permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada, but is not a Canadian citizen. Permanent residents are citizens of other countries.

As a permanent resident, you have the right to:
Get most social benefits that Canadian citizens receive, including health care coverage,
live, work or study anywhere in Canada,
apply for Canadian citizenship,
protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
You must pay taxes and respect all Canadian laws at the federal, provincial and municipal levels.
Express Entry is a competitive immigration system, ranking all eligible candidates against one another and then inviting the best ranking candidates to apply for Canadian permanent resident status.
The first step for any person is to fulfill the eligibility check. Every applicant has to furnish his/her details. In this first eligibility check one must secure a minimum of 67 points out of a maximum of 100.

Below are the types of visa streams for which Express Entry accepts applications:
The Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC)
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
The Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC)
The process in 3 parts: Pre-Application, Pre-ITA and Post-ITA.
Pre-application phase – A phase where you have NOT created an online Express Entry (hereafter referred as EE) profile
Pre-ITA phase – A phase where you have created an online profile and you are waiting to get your Invitation to Apply (hereafter referred to as ITA).
Post-ITA phase – A phase where you have received an ITA and you are all set to submit your Permanent Resident (hereafter referred to as PR) application to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (hereafter referred to as CIC).
Step 1: Complete your Language ability Tests
Take IELTS (General) or TEF with score equivalent to CLB .
STEP 02: Education Credential Assessment
STEP 03: Create a profile for Express Entry with your IELTS score and ECA in IRCC website. Creating the EE profile enters you in the pool of candidates waiting for the ITA (Invitation to Apply).
STEP 04: Wait for the draw to reach your score and receive ITA. The ROI (Rounds of Invitation) happen every 2–3 weeks.
STEP 05: Post ITA, Submit your documents .The documents/information needed from the candidates are:
Scan of Travel Document (Passport) of all applicants
Digital Photograph of all applicants
Proof of Employment of primary applicant
Proof of Funds of primary applicant (+ spouse if coming along)
Proof of Medical of all applicants
Proof of Education & IELTS of all applicants eligible for jobs
Police Clearance Certificate (From all countries where you have resided for 6 months or more) of all applicants
STEP 06: Pay Immigration Fee and wait for the PPR
STEP 07: Receive PPR, submit Passport and get CoPR
STEP 08: Reach Canada on CoPR and apply for PR card.
STEP 09: Receive PR card (2–3 months)
STEP 10: You get Canadian PR.
PR card is provided with validity of 5 years. A person is suppose to live in Canada for 730 days in consecutive 5 years to continue his/her PR card for next 5 years after the expiry.
A person stayed in Canada for more than 1095 days in consecutive 5 years, will be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship.
